All new and incoming undergraduate mathematics students follow the same steps to get started in their first year at Johns Hopkins. These resources related will help you get started and choose your math courses for the first year.

  • All incoming first-year students are required to complete the Math Placement Process by June 15th. An outline of the process can be found on the Math Placement Process page.
  • Incoming students who place into Pre-calculus or Calculus I are eligible to participate in the Summer Program Accelerating Readiness and Knowledge (SPARK)! This free program allows students to earn a credit in the summer before their first-semester, meet other incoming students, work with near-peers and math faculty and be introduced to the expectations and strategies for success in a first math course at JHU. More information and registration instructions can be found on the SPARK & ALEKS page.
  • For information about choosing a course beyond the first semester, please read the advice and review the pathways through courses on the Choosing Courses Beyond the First Semester.
  • The Future Scholars Program is an opportunity for high school seniors enrolled in Baltimore-area schools to take Hopkins math classes for credit. For information about nominations and testing, visit the Future Scholars Program page.
